Woodlawn Reconstruction Starts Apr. 20

City News and Information Posted on April 07, 2026

Bel Aire, Kan. – The reconstruction of Woodlawn between 37th Street and 45th Street in Bel Aire is scheduled to begin on April 20. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027 and will occur in four consecutive phases. During phases one through three, each segment of the road that is under construction will be fully closed to through traffic, and detours will be required.

The project calls for a full reconstruction of Woodlawn between 45th Street and Quail Ridge Street. This will involve removing unstable subsurface soil and installing an underground drainage system to address groundwater. Quail Ridge Street to 37th Street will receive more moderate improvements, including the installation of a similar drainage system outside the existing curb and gutter, followed by milling and overlaying the roadway with new asphalt.

  • Phase 1 (estimated duration of two months): Quail Ridge Street to Rodeo Street
Traffic from Quail Ridge will detour south. Traffic from Rodeo will detour north.
  • Phase 2 (estimated duration of five months): Rodeo Street to Woodlawn Court

Perryton and Odessa access to Woodlawn will be closed. Traffic from Rodeo will detour south. Traffic from Woodlawn Court will detour north.
  • Phase 3 (estimated duration of five months): Woodlawn Court to 45th Street
Danbury and 44th Street access to Woodlawn will be closed. Traffic from the north will detour using 45th Street. Traffic from Woodlawn Court will detour south.
  • Phase 4 (estimated duration of two months): Quail Ridge Street to 37th Street
This phase will not require full roadway closures. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers are anticipated.

Phase timelines are based on current estimates and may be impacted by weather or other unforeseen conditions discovered during construction

“From the beginning, we recognized the importance of identifying the true cause of Woodlawn’s failure and designing a lasting solution,” said Mayor Jim Benage on behalf of the Bel Aire City Council. “Although the process was extensive, we can now begin reconstruction with confidence and a clear path forward.”

The project remains open with KDOT, which has committed to covering the associated costs while the legal process continues. Throughout the reconstruction, the City of Bel Aire will provide regular updates and information as each phase progresses.
